Background of the Study
The indigenous language in Owo Local Government Area has long been interwoven with the traditional religious practices that define community identity and spirituality. The language not only facilitates communication of ritualistic expressions but also transmits mythologies, proverbs, and oral traditions that have been preserved over generations (Okoro, 2023). This study critically examines how indigenous language serves as a medium for religious incantations, prayers, and symbolic storytelling that reinforce cultural norms and spiritual beliefs. The deep-seated connection between language and ritualistic practice is evident in ceremonies where specific lexicons and chants invoke ancestral powers and communal solidarity (Adebayo, 2024). Moreover, contemporary challenges such as globalization and language shift pose significant risks to these traditions. The erosion of indigenous linguistic competence could lead to a loss of cultural heritage and religious identity. Hence, understanding the role of language in these practices is crucial for preserving cultural integrity and informing policy interventions that support indigenous language revitalization (Olaoye, 2023). The study thus situates itself at the intersection of linguistics, anthropology, and religious studies, providing a comprehensive outlook on the socio-religious dynamics at play.
Statement of the Problem
Despite its cultural significance, the indigenous language in Owo is increasingly endangered due to urbanization and the dominance of global languages. This study identifies the weakening transmission of traditional religious lexicons and practices as a critical issue. The problem is compounded by insufficient documentation and support, leading to potential cultural disintegration (Ibrahim, 2024).
